Melville Castle is fortunate to have several good fisheries and lochs near by, and not to forget the North Esk River that meanders its way through the Castle's grounds.  Fishing has an established tradition within the Pentland Hills. Five reservoirs within the park permit fishing and are managed by private clubs, organisations or individuals. 

The North Esk at Melville Castle
The North Esk River is home to the Brown Trout, and as a long section of the river is privately owned by the Castle, hotel guests have exclusive use. It is a beautiful and unique setting, with the Castle and wooded grounds forming the perfect backdrop.

Loganlee Reservoir
Loganlea Reservoir is located at the far end of the Glen road, beyond Glencorse reservoir and is operated between 1st March and 30th November by Mr Jack. Both bank and boat fishing are available for rainbows and browns. The facilities include a café for anglers, tackle for sale and tuition.

Dooks Fisheries
Dooks fisheries run the nearby Glencourse & Clubbiedean Reservoirs.  Glencorse Reservoir was designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1822 at a cost of £145,000. It is still used as a public water supply. At the point where the Kirk burn flows into the reservoir lies the sunken 13th century ruin of St Catherine's Chapel.

Markle Fishery
Just 20 minutes drive from the Castle is the Markle Fishery, which consists of two game fishing lochs and a course fishing pool. The game fishing includes rainbow, brown, golden and tiger trout. Equipment hire and tuition are available. Markle provides a range of tickets and fishing options to suit beginner or expert alike, and especially welcome families.
